Matisyahu

Torah food for my brain let it rain til I drown, Thunder! Let the blessings come down!

Matisyahu is the Ashkenazi Hebrew name for Mattathias (Matityahu in Hebrew) the Jewish high priest who led his family, the Hasmonean Maccabees in the wars against the Greeks

Matisyahu is also the name for a popular modern Jewish Reggae singer. Real name Mathew Paul Miller. He is a member of the Lubavitch Hasidic community in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York. Born in West Chester his family eventually settled in White Plains, New York, and for some time he played by the alias "MC Truth" for MC Mystic`s Soulfari Band., around 2001 he turned to Orthodox Judaism and began playing with the Jewish band `Pey Dalid`.

Matisyahu studied Torah in Hadar Hatorah, and wrote and recorded his first Album while still a student there. He counts among his musical inspirations Bob Marley, Phish, and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, also giving credit to Rabbi Simon Jacobson`s book `Toward A Meaningful Life` for the lyrical inspiration to the title song of his new Album `Youth`.

His band has a unique sound, covering all styles of music, likewise his fans are from all walks of life. He sometimes performs with Kenny Muhammad, a Muslim Beat-boxer. He has also provided vocals for the songs `Roots In Stereo` and `Strength Of My Life` to be found on the 2006 Album `Testify` by P.O.D. When he does sing reggae it’s more on the lines of traditional Rasta Roots style, mixed with Dub sound.

He has been compared to lots of other artists from the likes of Buju Banton, Sizzla, and Junior Kelly, but with the upbeat message of Luciano, Bushman and Everton Blender, however mixed in with this is his incredible style of rap and beat-boxing. This may disappoint Reggae purists, but you have to acknowledge his unique blend of musical traditions that Matisyahu Harnesses.

Most of his lyrics are in English, with the odd Hebrew and Yiddish words sprinkled in. He will not perform on a Friday as working on the Shabbat is forbidden.
