Zion Train - Glastonbury Town Hall Oct 09

Zion Train - Glastonbury Town Hall Oct 09

Zion Train appeared at the 'Back 2 its Roots' gig in Glastonbury Town Hall to help raise funds for two Ethiopian charities, For-ethiopia and Plan Lalibela. Zion Train have just released a new album, 'Live as One Remixed'

The Glastonbury town hall is a nice little venue with a makeshift bar. There are no real ales or large choices of drinks here, but when you come for the music it doesn't really mater. It gets rather warm in the hall especially when security don't open the fire exits for some cool night air. There is no smoking area which is a pain, unless you have backstage access you have to go out the front for a smoke.

First on was Messenjah Youths with DJ Locks at the controls. Messenjah Youths are the children of Messenjah Sound System, a system from the South West that has been around since 1982. It was beautiful to see the younger generation passionate about Reggae music and clearly enjoying playing the tunes on stage.

As Zion Train set up Hugh and Catherine Sharp of Plan Lalibela and Rob Grieve and Dudley Thomas of For-ethiopia came on to say a few words about the charities before the music got started. Both charities support some really beneficial and inspirational projects in Ethiopia.

Zion Train came on and the crowd surged forward and erupted in a frenzy of dancing, shouting and cheering. Neil Perch spun the vinyl whilst bringing his own unique style of live dub mixing into the tunes. Trumpet player Dave Hake and Saxophone Richard Doswell filled the atmosphere with soft hypnotic notes from their instruments. Dubdadda got everyone dancing that little bit faster as well as inspiring the crowd with his lyrics.

Zion Train are different every time, they never rehearse and so their live shows are completely improvised. All the tracks were amazing, really uplifting and with lots of energy. They played a couple of tracks from the award winning 'Live as One' album including 'Terror Talk' and 'Give Me Good Sensi'. The crowd were going crazy by the end and the hall was filled with very sweaty dancing bodies. Zion Train ended the night with the classic 'War Inna Babylon' and everyone went mental for the last few minutes.

In all a great gig at a good venue with a really nice crowd :)
