DJ Andy Smith – Greensleeves Document

Andy Smith returns with another fabulous addition to his ‘Document’ collection. This time he delves into the mighty Greensleeves back catalogue, mixing together a classic selection from arguably the largest and most successful UK record label of its time. On this outing, Smith is joined by Brother Culture, who brings his slick vocal talents to the mix.

As with the Trojan Document the album is recorded in a mix-tape style, with Brother Culture chatting pon the MIC, giving the album a feeling of a live sound system show. An excellent additional touch is that Smith had Brother Culture lay down some original vocals over several classic Greensleeves tracks. Cuts like ‘Come Down Pon A Sound’, which rides Wayne Smith’s 'Sleng Teng' and ‘Take Heed To The Champion’, which rides the ‘Death In The Area’ riddim and follows King Kong’s Trouble Again’ are both outstanding and clearly showcase the talents of Brother Culture.

Anyone who knows their reggae will have heard (and no doubt own) most, if not all, of the tunes included on the album. Personally I don’t have a problem with this; I simply sit back, light a spliff and enjoy the selection. Smith has chosen tracks that are special to him, some he remembers hearing on local reggae radio stations at the time and others are tunes he would, as a kid, borrow from a local sound system in Bristol.

Overall this is well worth a few quid and if you’re anything like me it won’t leave your system for sometime to come. Run the track selector!
