Asian Dub Foundation - Punkara

ADF have always been a huge favourite of mine, admittedly it's not reggae in the true sense of the word and the sound won’t appeal to all, but there’s no denying that ADF’s influence has been global. To emphasise this point guests on the new release include such international stars as Iggy Pop and Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello fame).

After a 3 ½ year absence ADF returned with the astounding 'Punkara'. The line up now consists of former King Prawn singer Al Rumjen and they have welcomed Aktarvator back into their ranks. The first thing I noticed was the sound harks back to the days of Rafi’s Revenge, with its formidable ‘in ya face’ attitude. 'Punkara' is loud, angry and thunders along at a staggering pace, blending traditional banghra beats with punk, jungle, hip-hop and punk in that unmistakable ADF style.

The opening track ‘Target Practice’ sets the tone for things to come, which is angry, protest music at its very best. My personal favourite ‘Burning Fence’ follows with ‘Superpower’ close on it heels, both coming at you at break neck speed! There’s very little let up in this kinda style, however ‘Speed of Light’ takes the tempo down a notch as ADF ponder the curse of modern, fast paced living. The album never strays far from a political statement, with ‘Living Under The Radar’ being an excellent example which reminds me of the Clash. The ADF crew even treat you to two extra live tracks, which are firmly bolted onto the end of the album.

'Punkara' captures the real essence of what ADF are all about and is a real return to form. The album has the lot, tunes about government sponsored torture, drug addicted politicians and middle class violence. The fusion of musical styles and mix of cultures is simply sublime. The tune which really encapsulates this is ‘No Fun’. Whoever had the inspiration to put Iggy and ADF together is a genius for sure!
