Ranking Steady – Mooch n Tools
Rankin Steady are a Ska & Reggae band from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire formed in the Mid 80's by Shaun Danby, A.K.A (Skankin J.Bob), influenced by S.J.B's love for early reggae like Dennis Brown, Lee Perry and Dr Alimantado.
Rankin split up in 1987 inspiring Skankin J.Bob and Damo to record 'Propaganda' album featuring original material. The album was then later promoted when the band briefly reformed.
In 1996, the band reformed replacing Damo on the drums with Nubes, Martin Brown on lead, Villaman on Bass, Nipster on Rythm and Skankin J.Bob on vocals and keyboard.
The Following year, Nubes tragically dies and Scott Walters arrives on drums, Damo returns to percussion along with Rob on guitar backed by the 'Dub sisters' - Sister Beverley(sax) & 'The Turtle'(trumpet).
Rankin Steady performs at scooter rallies, mod events and other venues all over the east midlands doing a combination of covers and original material.
The album Mooch n Tools features 8 tracks all rooted in the original 2-tone ska sound of the skinhead romping days of yonder. The 3rd track “Dub on a Sunbed” shows the band has the musical talent to be taken seriously but I have to admit that for the most of this album, I felt I was listening to a pub band. Don’t get me wrong, a good one but not a festival headlining band.
To give respect that is due, there is nothing technically wrong with this album and it’s got its audience. I can’t find fault with any of the musicianship or production of the music, and if I were to book a band for a gig (to warm-up or small party), then I will be calling these guys.

I also received a copy of the ‘Live At…’ Album, now this just shows how good they musicians are with the band covering several reggae classics such as ‘Behold’, ‘Stir It Up’ and many more as well as a few original productions. If you see their name on a poster near you, it is well worth a visit to check these guys yourself.
