Jah Roots - Crucial

After the success of their first two albums, which were released for free, Jah Roots return with their new studio release ‘Crucial’. Hailing from Springfield, Missouri, this seven-piece band continue where the previous albums left off, with refreshing and vibrant roots, rock, reggae, which is clearly designed to get you up and skanking. Several guests appear on this release, including I-Ron and the mighty Badda Skat. Both these guests add an extra dimension to the sound with their unique sing-jay styles; check ‘Chat Down Babylon’ and the title track as first-rate examples. Another nice touch is the use of samples from old time classic tunes. Israel VibrationsSame Song’ riddim is used on the cut ‘Secrets’ and Barrington Levy’s massive tune ‘Murderer’ is given tribute on ‘Don’t You See The Problem’.

The more I listen to the singer, Ras Josh the more impressive I find his style; it has a soulful quality and is reminiscent of reggae greats, such as Justin Hinds. Highlights for me include the title track, the mellow ‘Roll Up the Spliff’ and the dreadlocks anthem ‘Fight Down We Chalwa’.

It’s very clear that Jah Roots are a talented bunch, who have an ear for the bygone days of the roots era. Their sound is sharp and provokes thought with their positive message and I sincerely hope they are able to draw more fans into the Jah Roots fold with their new distribution direction.
