The Skatalites – Rolling Steady (The 1983 Music Mountain Sessions)

This is an amazing set of lost gems from the tightest ska/reggae outfit to ever have graced the musical airways. Recorded in 1983 at the JA based Music Mountain, these songs have never been released before and feature a reunited Skatalites, minus of course the mighty Don Drummond.

The results of these sessions are a set of spectacular tunes; each song showcasing the bands maturity, flawless ability and dazzling musicianship. The opening track ‘We Nah Sleep’ has compelling arrangements with a driving riddim that’s pure Skatalites. Included on the album is ‘Big Trombone’ a fitting tribute to the late, great, Don Drummond with Calvin Cameron substituting on the trombone. Each and every track has its own merits with the interplay between Roland and Tommy being impeccable on all levels.

On a personal note I particularly enjoy listening to ‘Ider’s Rest’, with its long drawn out horn stabs and bright brass blasts. ‘Master’s Call’ is another favourite of mine, reminding me of that old time swing style, fed by driving piano lines and eerie harmonic horns.

No matter which song you may choose as a personal favourite one thing is for sure, this album reinforces the undeniable fact that The Skatalites remain the most important and unique band in the history of Jamaican music. A must own!
