Dylan Murray - White Wing Roots

Dylan was born into a musical family and raised in Toronto. He taught himself to play the guitar at the tender age of sixteen. His influences included folk, rock and particularly reggae. His love of reggae led him to spend some time in Jamaica working with local schools and orphanages. The name of the album is taken from the White Wing Housing Projects in Kingston and a portion of the proceeds from the official launch of the album went to the project.

This was my first taste of Dylan Murray. The album landed on my desk in a well presented back sleeve along with some detailed information on the artist. So I flung it on, pressed play and sat back for a listen.

The opening track ‘Money Thing’ is an acoustic cut, which showcases Dylan’s unique and impressive vocal talents. The song is emotive and the genuine emotion from his voice carries to the listener. Next up is a real treat, ‘Babylon Will Fall’ which features Dark Angel - a beautifully uplifting reggae cut. The added mix of the deejay style vocal of Dark Angel and the wonderful horn section gives this song a life and energy of its own. The album continues in the same vain with ‘If You Wanna Give’, another remarkably enriching track. Dylan sounds so at ease with the music. His vocals flow effortlessly, creating an inspiring and uplifting vibe. ‘I Love The Way You’ finds Dylan in an easy listening and romantic mood. Personally I feel that this is the weakest track on the release, however it still suits the overall feel of the album.

Don’t Wanna Sit Around’ finds Dylan returning to his acoustic guitar for a beautifully composed folk ballad. ‘Batti Ryda Raid’ follows, again featuring the added vocals of Dark Angel. This is a tongue-in-cheek style cut which will have you singing along to the chorus in no time. ‘This Is My Life’ keeps the uplifting vintage reggae sounds alive with a song of living life the way you want. The album then rounds off with another captivating folk style ballad entitled ‘So Far From The Earth’.

'White Wing Roots' is an album of vintage reggae sounds mixed with a dose of intelligently composed ballads. It’s consistently impressive and creates a feeling of laid back sunshine vibes. Dylan flows with the ease of someone who is clearly passionate for his music and craft.
