Toots and The Maytals - Pressure Drop: The Definitive Collection

'Pressure Drop' is not truly a definitive collection, as this release only covers the bands Trojan years (1964-75). However considering that when The Maytals moved to Island records they re-recorded much of their previous music then this could be called a definitive 'classic' collection. This release has less of the slick island sound and the quality is not as clean, making the music much more authentic and truly infectious.

The twin CD is in chronological order and includes all the classic tunes, like ‘Monkey Man’, ‘Pressure Drop’, ‘Sweet and Dandy’ and ’54-46 Was My Number’. You’re also treated to more obscure tracks like ‘Johnny Coolman’, ‘Bla Bla Bla’ and a great performance of ‘We Shall Overcome’.

As with all Toots tunes it’s the voice that makes the music, from soul to gospel via old time rhythm and blues; Hibbert has the ranges and the skill to make any track stand out. The production work on these tunes was undertaken by the legendary Leslie Kong which just adds to the original old time vibe feeling.

The album begins with the energetic pace of ska, moving through rock steady and reggae as the album progresses. You’re treated to around fifty Toots tracks and are taken on a real music journey along the way. Any fan of The Maytals will be overjoyed with this collection.
