The Congos - Give Them The Rights |

This was the first new material to be released in seven years and over three years in the making by the voice of the Congos ‘Cedric Myton’.
Released by Young Tree records on May 5th 2005 ‘Give Them The Rights’ is a collection of eleven songs that in places takes you right back to the golden age of the Congos at their best, all tracks written by Cedric, most of them co-written with his wife Yvonne. This is a Cedric Myton album with no other original Congos members, but with an impressive line up of reggae singers and players such as Sly & Robbie, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace, the late Junior Delgado, Earl ‘Heptone’ Morgan, Mafia & Fluxy, Johnny Moore, David Madden, Dean Fraser, Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, Junior Marvin, Dwight Pinkney, Gladstone Anderson, Bongo Herman and Flabba Holt, to name a few.
It’s eleven well arranged and tightly played original roots riddims and Cedric Myton is at his best, delivering his soulful falsetto voice with true passion throughout. I must give a mention here to the excellent work from Young Tree records who until this time had dealt exclusively with 'Groundations' remarkable works, but have now branched out with other bands.Their quality of production and obvious care for the artists and music is second to none.
Although there are parts that do take you back to the golden age of the ‘Congos’ there is no attempt to update the old ‘Congos’ sound, this is a new fresh sounding album. Song topics range from protest on the title track ‘Give Them The Rights’ to praising Rastafari on ‘Praise H.I.M.’ to the character study of the showy rich `Mr. Shark`. They are all solid excellent tracks, my personal favorites are ‘Mr. Shark’ and the beautiful classic ‘Born Again.’ This would be in my pick of must have albums, It is a return to the ‘golden age,’ not only of the ‘Congos’ but of roots reggae itself.
