Raymond Wright – Many As One |

As with any album, the opening track is so important as it sets the mode for the rest of the album and this album has a top quality opening track called “Better Place” which like all the tracks on the album is a rich roots led track with wonderful melodies. In fact the first 3 tracks all follow this type of quality roots track and by track 4 you are nicely chilled and enjoying the album.
Now then track 4 “Hand That Feed You” is a loose dancehall flavour with guest MC and is a wicked track. After this slight discursion in genre we are back into roots based music with yet more total quality vocals and melodic tracks all leading through to the title track “Many As One” which is the strongest track on a strong album.

Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives |

So what can you expect from Distant Relatives? Well first off this is a weighty album, tackling African poverty, tribal war and the diamond trade to name but a few topics. This is achieved without coming across as preachy and is made possible due to fantastic vocal interplay. Nas delivers fast flowing, compelling raps alongside the unique vocals of Junior Gong, who has a knack for creating simple lyrical phrases which hit straight to the heart of the matter. Musically the album is fairly diverse and instantly recognisable as being produced by Stephen Marley. The sound is modern without being too over glossy. The influence clearly leans more towards reggae and African vibes than hip-hop, which I think is a positive move. The style seems to suit Nas and his vocals really shine through on cuts like ‘Friends’ and ‘Strong Will Continue’.

Pama International - Pama Outernational |

I was anticipating this release just hoping it would be better than the awesome previous album and I was not disappointed. From the outset you are placed straight into the sound that has now become Pama International with the excellent opening track “Equality & Justice For All”. This is followed by a track that is fast becoming a regular spinner for me, “Dub A Disco” is just so upbeat and begs a good old fashioned skank while listening too. These two top opening tracks are followed by yet another, “Are We Saved Yet?” displays the top production and sound that now follows this band everywhere they go.
